Providencia “Provi” Pena (nee Ramos-Aponte) 88 of Lake Station, IN, passed away peacefully onTuesday, August 30, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Efrain Pena; loving mother of Maria (Frank) Basham, Lucy (Thomas) Chocholek and the late Juan Gabriel Pena; dearest mother-in-law of Nancy Pena; cherished grandmother of Mary Ellen (Todd) Basham, Lianne (Edward) Fritz, Stephen J. (Sara) Grenchik, Scott G. Grenchik, Michele (Juan) Leyva, Richard Baez, Mellisa (Brian) Corbeille, Jason Pena, John (Michelle) Pena, Jr. and the late David Pena; adoring great grandma of eleven.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00am directly at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 119th St., and Lincoln Ave., Whiting, with the Rev. Jerome P. Stack, C.PP.S., officiating; cremation to follow; visitation at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; wake service at the funeral home on Friday at 4:30pm.

Providencia Pena was born on May 14, 1928 in Puerto Rico to Jose and Ramona Colon and was a resident of the Calumet Region for the past 64 years. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, “Provi” will be remembered for being an excellent cook  (especially Spanish rice and beans!).  She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
