Ambrose J. Kapitan, 81 of Dyer, formerly of Whiting, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017 at his residence. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 year, Patricia (nee Wenglarz); loving father of Barbara (Donnie) Osborne, James Kapitan, Diane (late Ed) Fultz and JoAnn (Mike) Creviston; adoring grandfather of John, Abigail and Daniel Kapitan; cherished brother of Mary (late George) Germek, Tillie (Ray) Bryan and the late Rudy, Tony, John and Joseph Kapitan; dear brother-in-law of Mary E. Kapitan and Eleanor Kapitan; proud uncle to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017 with a Mass of Christian Burial being offered at 10:00am at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Drive, Dyer, with the Rev. Charles W. Niblick, officiating; interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville; visitation, Thursday at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting from 4:00 to 8:00pm and at the church Friday morning from 9:00am to time of services.

Ambrose Kapitan was born on May 4, 1936 in Whiting, Indiana to Rudolph and Johanna Kapitan and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Dyer and the Knights of Columbus, Council 8082, Dyer. Ambrose was a longtime Whiting Police Officer, retiring as Whiting’s Chief of Police and was a member of the Whiting F.O.P. Lodge #68. He was a United States Army Veteran and an avid sports fan.  A true family man, Ambrose loved being surrounded by his children and grandchildren and the time spent together as a family. A devoted husband, father and grandpa, Ambrose will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Red Cross, would be appreciated.
