Sylvia Mata Obituary

Sylvia G. Mata (nee Ybarra), 75 of East Chicago, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late Vincent Mata; loving mother of Melecio M. (Jennifer) Mata, late Raúl V. Mata and Jenny J. Mata; cherished grandmother of Justina Mata, Mariah Mata, Melecio Mata II, late Johnathan Mata, Kiana Mata, Raúl Mata, Emillio Mata, Matteo Mata, Maia Mata, Jesus Mata, Andrew Dejesus, Richard Paz Jr., Julian Paz and Miranda Paz; adoring great-grandmother of Melecio, Isabella, Eliana, Olivia, Valentin, Luis, Angie, Aaliyah and Bella; dear sister of David (Maria) Ybarra, Ronald (Melva) Ybarra, Cynthia Ybarra and Marcelino (Yolanda) Ybarra II; dearest aunt to many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her life partner, Phillip Ring.

Private services have been held. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. John the Baptist Church Catholic Church in Whiting, IN. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on-line at www.baranfh.com.

Sylvia Mata was born in Chicago, IL on April 3, 1950 to Ramona Ybarra (nee Camacho) and the late Marcelino Ybarra. She graduated with the class of 1968 from Bowen High School in Chicago, IL. She was a longtime active choir member of St. Brides Church in Chicago and devotedly volunteered at the food pantry at St. Florian Church in Hegewisch, IL. Sylvia loved Halloween and would hand sew all of her costumes. She loved her dogs and to go fishing. Sylvia found great joy in being a grandmother and always remembered to send each of her grandkids a gift for every birthday. Devoted to her family, Sylvia will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
