Richard Mikola Obituary

Richard G. Mikola, 90 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to the late Margaret (Theobald) Mikola who passed away June 6, 2020; loving father of Rose (Jon) Hirsch, Richard, Michaele and Mark (Anna) Mikola; cherished grandfather of Jillian Hirsch, Ava and Nicolas Mikola; dearest brother of the late Margaret Boland and Helen Rowland; dear brother-in-law of Frank (Mary) Theobald and Henry “Hank” (Carolyn) Theobald; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation at Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00pm; members of the parish will offer prayers at the funeral home on Thursday at 5:30pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 at 9:30am at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial offered at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; interment, St. John Cemetery, Hammond. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on-line at www.baranfh.com. 

Richard Mikola was born on October 29, 1934 to Michael and Sara (Lux) Mikola and was a lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community. He was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1952 and earned his Bachelor Degree in Business Management from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. Rich worked at LTV Steel, then at the City of Hammond as Comptroller and retired as manager of the Water Dept. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council, was a past president of the former Holy Name Society and worked at the St. John Panel Room. Rich was an honorary lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Pope John XXIII Council 1696 (prayers, Thursday at 6:30pm), and had served in the US Army Reserves. He volunteered and coached at Robertsdale Little League for many years. Enjoying a leisurely retirement, he loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Richard will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. John Church Capital Campaign, 1849 Lincoln Ave., Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated.
