Phyllis M. Ratkay (nee Bojda), 75 of Whiting passed away Monday, June 5, 2023 at the Community Hospital, Munster. She was the beloved wife of 53 years to the late Frank E. Ratkay who passed away December 13, 2022; loving mother of Paul (Angie) Ratkay, Sarah (Anthony) Kenning, Esther (Jason) Hill and Ruth (Rigoberto) Montoya; cherished grandmother of Scott, Gavin, Derek, Owen, Leah and the late Luke; dearest sister of Edward (Joann) Bojda, Evelyn (late Paul) Kovacik, Corinne (Jerry) Vargo and the late Karen Holdosh; dear sister-in-law of Michael Ratkay and Marlene (late Joseph) Ratkay; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; interment, St. John Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Parish Wake Service at the funeral home on Friday at 5:00pm. Phyllis Ratkay was born on August 4, 1947 to Edward and Helena (Dvorscak) Bojda. A lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community, she was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1965. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Assoc., BR. 81 and the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union, BR. 79. An avid reader, Phyllis enjoyed doing cross-stitch, cooking, baking (especially her roshky), gardening and flowers but most of all spending time with her grandchildren and family. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Phyllis will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
