Michael J. Swentko, 81 of Whiting, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2025 at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Suzanne (nee Gaidos); loving father of Michael E. (Christie) Swentko and Christopher Swentko; cherished grandpa of Michael A. Swentko; dearest brother of Jeanette Nondorf; nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be held at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting, IN on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Expressions of sympathy may be placed online at www.baranfh.com.
Michael Swentko was born on June 2, 1943 to John and Valentine (Kazmierski) Swentko and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. He was a US Airforce Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He joined the Hammond Police Dept. in 1968 attaining the rank of Sergeant in the Juvenile Bureau, retiring with a service of 27 years. A member of the Hammond F.O.P #51, he was the recipient of the Delbert Purkey Award for supporting fraternalism and brotherhood in 2005 and was awarded the Hammond Policeman of the year by the Hammond Optimist Club in 1982. An avid golfer, Michael participated with the FOP Golf League for many years. Devoted to his family, Michael will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Hospice of the Calumet Area or the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, would be appreciated.
