Larry R. “Rock” Stelow, 82 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, October 6, 2024 at his home. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dorotha Brenda Stelow (nee Smith); loving father of Brad (Carol Zebracki) Stelow and Scott (Kelly Beerman) Stelow; cherished grandfather of Cole, Blake and Paul Stelow, David Mourey and Markie (Jared) Meyers; adoring great grandpa of Jordan Richards, Justin Gruca, Bailey Stelow, Rusty Dinsmore, Brantley Brenna and Bristol Meyers; dearest brother of Dean (Rhonda Miller) Stelow; dear brother-in-law of Marlyn (Hunt) Mills and Frederick “Buck” (Victoria Paris) Mills; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Stelow; mother, Dorothy (Odell) Stelow Gotch Desjardins; sister, Carol (Stelow) Russell; grandson, Scott Stelow, Jr.; granddaughter, Ivy Mourey; brother-in-law, James “Charles” Smith and sisters-in-law, Faye (Smith) Cruz and Joyce (Smith) Buckner.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024, 2:00pm at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting with his brother Dean Stelow, officiating, followed by Masonic Services and Military Honors; visitation from 1:00pm to time of services. Larry Stelow was born on November 2, 1941 and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. A graduate of the Hammond Technical High School, Class of 1959 and was a US Navy Veteran. He was a member of the F.&A.M. Garfield Lodge 569 of Highland and was a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason. He was a retiree of the LTV (Cleveland Cliffs) Steel Co., East Chicago, with a service of 43 years and was a member of the USW Local 1010. An avid fisherman, Larry was a devoted lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed poker games with his “Region Rats”. Devoted to his family, Larry was a most generous and God loving man. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Whiting Food Pantry, P.O. Box 591, Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated.
