Kathryn S. Brtko, 69 of Whiting, passed away Monday, July 21, 2025, at Franciscan Health, Munster. She was the beloved daughter of the late Stephen and Anne (Liscinsky) Brtko; loving sister of Cecelia Largura and Carolyn (Patrick) Gorman; cherished aunt of Stephen (Amy) Gorman and Robert (Emily) Gorman; adoring great aunt of Stephen and Michael Gorman; and dear cousin to many.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 119th Street and Lincoln Avenue, Whiting, with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.P.P.S., officiating; private interment to follow; there is no visitation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting. Kathryn Brtko was born on November 13, 1955, and was a lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community. She was a graduate of Bishop Noll Institute, Class of 1973, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Purdue University. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Church, the St. John Rosary Society and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, BR. 452. A retiree of the BP Whiting Refinery, she was also a professional musician, playing the oboe and English horn. She participated with the Whiting Park Festival Orchestra, the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest Symphony Orchestra (Palos Heights, IL), and could be heard at many Sunday Masses at St. John Church. Devoted to her family, Kathryn will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, P.O.
