Joann A. Skvarek Banvich, 72 of Dyer passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at her residence. She was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Betty (Cerven) Skvarek; She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Allen Banvich; cherished sister of Joseph G. (Debbie) Skvarek; dearest sister-in-law of Eugene (Anita) Banvich; proud aunt of Michael (Madison) Skvarek, Kristina Skvarek, Eric (fiance' Mona) Banvich and Todd (Brooke) Banvich; dearest great auntie to canines, “Cooper”, “Mackey” and “Wally”.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 23, 2024, 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. Adalbert Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Charles W. Niblick, officiating; interment, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; visitation at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; wake service at the funeral home on Thursday at 4:00pm. Joann Skvarek Banvich was born on September 16, 1951 and was lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. She was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1969 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Purdue University Calumet. She was a devoted member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Whiting, where she was a member of the St. Ann Sodality, Rosary Society, was a member of the Holupky Dinner committee, was president of the Immaculate Conception Grotto Fund and was currently a member of St. Joseph Church, Dyer. Proud of her Slovak heritage, Joann was a very active member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, BR. 452, currently serving as a National Director for the past nine years and was a Vice President of the Helen Kocan Okres 6 as well as an auditor for Branch 452. Joann had served on the annual Lake County Slovak Day Committee for many years. Professionally, Joann had been a consultant to the Medical/Hospital Industry. Devoted to her family, Joann especially enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
