Jerome T. “Jerry” Progar, 86 of Schererville Story Point Senior Living Community, formerly of Whiting passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2023 at the Cedar Creek Health Campus, Lowell. Beloved father of Tammy (Bob) Walczak, Alan (Kathy) Progar, Kelly (late Steve) Sofaly, Tod (Maryanne) Vaughn; loving grandfather of Kenny Walczak, Nick (Shauna) Walczak, Amanda Sofaly, Jason (Wendy) Konrad; cherished great grandpa of Clarissa and Kaitlin Konrad; brother of Chuck Progar and the late John Progar and Marilyn Eichorst; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Mildred Kubon Coil.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Church, 118th Street and LaPorte Avenue, Whiting, with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; interment of cremains to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the church on Friday morning from 9:00am to time of services. Jerry Progar was born on March 10, 1937 to John and Eva (Jacobs) Progar and was a longtime resident of Whiting. He was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1955 and was a US Navy Veteran. A retiree of the LTV Steel Company, East Chicago, with a service of 42 years, he was a member of the USW, Local 1011. A member of Sacred Heart Church, Whiting, he also participated with the American Legion, Whiting Post 80, the Amvets Post 64, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Slovak Club, N.C.O.A. and the B.P.O E., Whiting Elks Lodge 1273. He had been a resident of Port Richey, Florida for a number of years and enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Whiting Food Pantry, P.O. Box 591, Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated.
