James Vargo, 74 of Whiting, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at the Community Hospital, Munster. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Linda (nee Canner); loving father of Daniel (Rosemary), Michael (Rachel), Brian, and Jimmy Vargo; cherished grandpa of Zachary, Camila, Caleb and Brayden; dearest brother of Steve “Joe” (Jeannette) Vargo, Bob, Marian and Edward Vargo, Lynn (Greg) Koscielski, Jerry (Corinne) Vargo and John (late Ruth) Vargo; dear brother-in-law of David Canner, Tom (Cindy) Canner, Michael (Nola) Canner, Cheryl (Robert) Clark, Jeff (Alex) Canner, Greg (Sylvia) Canner and Mark (SueEllen) Canner; many nieces and nephews and his furry companion, “Gizmo”.
A Celebration of Jim’s Life will take place on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 2:00pm at the American Slovak Club, 1324-119th Street, Whiting (please use the Temple Court entrance), with a memorial service at 3:00pm with Pastor Ry Torhan, officiating. James Vargo was born on November 23, 1949 to Stephen and Mary (Paunicka) Vargo. A lifelong residence of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community, he was a graduate of Bishop Noll Institute, Hammond, Class of 1967. He was a retired machinist from the American Maize Products Company (Cargill), Hammond, with a service of 37 years. He was a member of the American Slovak Club and Roosevelt Club. Jim enjoyed watching “Jeopardy”, playing with his Yorkies and time spent with his grandkids. Devoted to his family, James will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
