Howard C. Plemons

Howard C. Plemons, 93 of Whiting, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. He passed away peacefully at Park Place of St. John – Assisted Living.. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to the late Mildred “Emma” (Cooper) Plemons; loving father of  the late Greg H. Plemons and Theresa (Thomas) Bubacz; cherished grandfather “papaw” of Gregory J. (Erica) Plemons, Joshua (Jennifer) Plemons, Christin (Kevin) Martinczak and Olivia Plemons; adoring great “papaw” of Brianna (Corey) DeVries, Christian, Adelyn, Kyle, Cody, and Emma Plemons; proud great, great “papaw” of Daisy DeVries; dearest brother of Lil Atterberry ; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Harold, Arthur Lee, Edna Rodgers, James, Jr., Ruth Cooper, Frank, Henrietta, Jewell, Arvine, and Margie O’Connor.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026 at 10:00am at the Baran Funeral Home 1235-119th Street, Whiting with Pastor William Gibbs, officiating; interment, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be shared on-line at www.baranfh.com.

Howard Plemons was born on August 10, 1932 in Kingston, Tennessee to James and Carrie Plemons. A longtime resident of Whiting, he was a member of the Whiting Baptist Church for 46 years, where he served as custodian and did maintenance work for the church. He was a retiree of the LTV Steel Co., East Chicago, with a service of 45 years. Howard was exceptionally kind, caring and compassionate with a heart of gold and a quiet generosity that touched everyone who knew him. Always willing to lend a hand, Howard was a very talented handyman and carpenter.  He was also a talented automotive mechanic. In his early years, during his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars with his two brothers, Arvine and Dude. Howard’s garage was like stepping into Mayberry at Wally’s Service Station – a place for friends to stop by for an RC Cola, visit and have their cars fixed, Devoted to his family, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family wished to express their deepest appreciation to Kari and Nate, directors at the beautiful Park Place of St. John as well as Howard’s nurses, Rene, Brittney, Mary and  Laura to name a few.
