Hon. Robert J. Bercik, Fifteenth Mayor of the City of Whiting, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Hartsfield Village, Munster. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jackie (nee Hrapchak); loving father of Debra Bercik, Deann (Michael) Mantich, David (Kelli) Bercik and the late Denise Steeb; cherished grandfather of Jacob, Zachary, Joey, Christian, Danielle, Nina, Sara, Alex, Theo and Caden; adoring great grandpa of Jackson, Callan and Margaux; dearest brother of Dr. William Bercik, Tom (Alison) Bercik, Jim (Dr. Janet) Bercik, Ann Monroe, Mary J. Bercik, Irene (Ron) Chorba and Bette (Frank) Stasik; dear uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Private services were held, there will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on-line at www.baranfh.com.
Robert Bercik was born on February 1, 1938 to Whiting Mayors, William P. and Mary E. (Jancosek) Bercik and was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1955. Politically active for many years, Bob served as Mayor of the City of Whiting from 1988 to 2003, was a former Street Commissioner and Chairman of the Whiting Democratic Organization. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Whiting, the Knights of Columbus, Pope John XXIII Council, 1696, the American Slovak Club and the Whiting Lions Club. He was the owner and operator of the former Whiting Service Station for many years and enjoyed going mushroom picking and making chicken soup. Devoted to his family, Bob will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, would be appreciated.
