Gerard Zelenke Obituary

Gerard L. Zelenke of Wilmington, North Carolina, formerly of Whiting, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024 at age 87. He was born on May 2, 1937 in Berwyn, IL, the son of Ladd and Jean (Kalapach) Zelenke who preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, Dennis (Anne) Zelenke of  Highland, IN; nephew Brian (Carol) Zelenke of Ashburn, VA and great nephew, Ethan Zelenke of Erie, PA.; many cousins.

Gerry was a 1955 Whiting High School graduate, attended Purdue University and served his country as a US Marine for three years and 17 years in the United States Air Force. His interests included support of numerous charities, progressive causes and the Chicago Cubs! He cared deeply about democracy and freedom both here and abroad. His generosity whether for the homeless or associates left a lasting impression and sincere appreciation of many in the Wilmington community. He will be missed.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 10:00am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting; interment of cremains to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; memorial visitation on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.  Expressions of sympathy may be placed on-line at www.baranfh.com.
