Fred Behrens, 92 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, June 4, 2024 at Franciscan Health, Dyer, surrounded by his most precious family. He is survived by his beloved wife Janet Coyer; loving father of Fred (Diane) Behrens (HPD, ret.), Cindy (Todd) Kerr and the late Kathy (Ray) Vaught; cherished grandfather of Megan (Max) Laughlin, Lauren, Katie and Nathan Behrens, Rob (Jennifer) Vaught, Ryan (Amie) Vaught, Nicole (late Joseph) Flores, Aaron (Karyn) Vaught, Alex (Kylie) Kerr, Steven (Tasha) Kerr and David (Nicole) Kerr; adoring great grandpa of twenty-one; proud great, great grandpa of one; dearest brother of Bill (Marty) Behrens and the late Otto Behrens, Judy Kotlarz and Bobby Behrens; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine “Gerry” Behrens (nee Rosinski) on November 8, 1993.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 10:00a.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting, with Pastor Tom K. Norwalk of the Zion United Church of Christ, Dyer, officiating; interment to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the funeral home on Monday, from 3:00 to 7:00p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on-line at www.baranfh.com.
Fred Behrens was born on December 31, 1931 to Fred and Elsie (Sihocky) Behrens. A lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community, he was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1950. He was a member of the former St. Petri Church, Chicago, currently a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Dyer. Fred was a retiree of the ARCO Oil Refinery, East Chicago, with a service of 20 years and was an independent teamster for many years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion, Whiting Post 80 (Memorial Service, Monday at 5:00p.m.). He was a member of the Hammond Mohawks (prayers, Monday at 6:00p.m.), the Hammond Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 51, a Deputy Sheriff for Lake and Porter Counties and had participated with the Marian Theatre Guild of St. John Church, Whiting. He enjoyed riding his bicycle and scooter, doing aerobics and operating heavy equipment. Devoted to his family, Fred will be sadly missed by all who knew and love him.
