Barbara A. (Skurka) Michniewicz

Barbara A. Michniewicz (nee Skurka), 94 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at the Munster Med-Inn. She was the beloved wife of 67 years to the late Edward J. Michniewicz who passed away November 20, 2018; loving mother of Thomas (Cathy), Timothy (Jean), Lorie (Al) Matulewicz, Edward “Ernie” (Julie) and the late Laurie; cherished grandmother of Ryan (Michelle), Tom (Rachel Tredway), Delaney, Nolan and Aubrey Michniewicz,  Emily (Matt) Coyle and Luke (Carly) Matulewicz; adoring great grandma of eight; proud great, great grandma of three; dearest sister of  Charles (Carol) Skurka; many dear nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her great granddaughter, Juno Michniewicz and her brother, Albert (late Mary) Skurka.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. Adalbert Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; interment, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; parish wake service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 4:30pm. Barbara Michniewicz was born on March 22, 1931 to Charles and Anna (Chesney) Skurka. She was a lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community and was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1948. She was currently a member of St. Adalbert Church, Whiting and had been a devoted member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Whiting, where she had participated with the St. Ann Sodality, spent countless hours making nut rolls and noodles and chairing many Holubki Dinners, all for the support of Immaculate Conception Church. She was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, Branch 452, was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino and cherished her Christmas Eve Vilija with her family. Devoted to her family, Barbara will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Immaculate Conception Grotto Fund, c/o the St. John Rectory, 1849 Lincoln Ave., Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated.
