Porfiria Román (nee Muñiz) 79 of Whiting, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago. She was the beloved wife of the late José Román who passed away in 1997; loving mother of José Román, Jr., Santita (Humberto) Rivera, Arlin (fiancée Andrew Lewis) Román, Evelyn Román, Elvin (Karla) Román and Rosselyn Román; cherished grandmother of ten; adoring great grandma of one; dearest sister of Israel Muñiz, Elisa Gonzalez, Carlos Muñiz, Clara Muñiz, Ramona Sanchez and Enrique Muñiz; dear aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 with a Mass of Christian Burial being offered at 10:00 am at Holy Angels Cathedral, 640 Tyler St., Gary, IN, with the Rev. Kevin McCarthy, officiating; burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Gary; visitation at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting on Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 2:00 to 6:00pm and at the church on Monday morning from 9:00am to time of services. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Sunday at 2:15 pm.

Porfiria Román was born on July 25, 1937 to Enrique and Ramona (Gonzalez) Muñiz in Lares, Puerto Rico. She was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region and  was a former employee of the Florsheim Shoe Factory, Chicago. Porfiria enjoyed cooking, knitting, embroidering and making knit dolls but above all she loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
