Michael “ Mickey” Horvat, Jr., 85 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 3, 2017 at his residence. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary (nee Kubicko); loving father of Kathy (Pat) Terrell of Zionsville, IN, Susan Horvat of Highland, IN, Michael (Tina) Horvat of Lebanon, IN and Marjorie (Gary) Spiering of Minneapolis, MN; cherished grandfather of Elizabeth and Christian Terrell, Lindsay (Travis) Overton, Sydney and Michelle Horvat, Michael, Rachel and Nicholas Spiering; adoring great grandpa of Delaney Overton; dearest brother of Edward (Elaine) Horvat of Ohio, Irene (late Charles) Crowe of Chicago and the late William “Bill” Horvat; proud uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; 10:00am Liturgy at St. Mary’s Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. Stephen Muth, officiating; interment, St. Mary Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; Parastas Service at the funeral home on Tuesday.
Michael Horvat was born on November 14, 1931 in Whiting, Indiana to Michael, Sr. and Ann (Halajcsik) Horvat and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of St. Mary’s Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Whiting and the Greek Catholic Union. Mike was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1949 and was a US Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Corporal. A retiree of the Amoco Oil (BP) Company, with a service of 42 years, he was a member of the Amoco Oil Annuitants Club. An avid bowler at Olympia Lanes, Hammond, Mike enjoyed fishing, reading and especially loved family gatherings. A devoted husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa, “Mickey” will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
