Lawrence J. “Larry” McClelland, 81 of Whiting, passed away Monday, January 1, 2018 at Symphony of Crown Point. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sylvia (nee Gabor); loving father of Barbara (Dave) Smolen, Debra (Jerry) McClelland-Parker, Brian McClelland, Laura J. (Tim) Kessler and his late infant daughter, Laura May McClelland; cherished grandfather of Elise (fiancée, Sean Kurowski) Smolen, Lauren (fiancée, John Kuhlke) Smolen, Eric, Michael and Kathleen Smolen, Lawrence E. (Cassie) McClelland, Nicholas and Rachel McClelland; dearest brother of Lorraine Sheehan and the late Gloria Zuffa and Richard “Dick” McClelland; nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 7:30pm at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting, with the Rev. Koloman K. Ludwig, officiating; cremation to follow; visitation at the funeral  home on Friday from 4:00pm to time of services.

Larry McClelland was born on May 28, 1936 to Lawrence and Barbara (Ryan) McClelland and was a lifelong resident of Whiting. He was a member of the former Hungarian Reformed Church, Whiting, where he was on the committee for the making of the annual Hungarian Sausage. Larry was a member of the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society and had been a contributor to the monthly WRite-Stuff. He was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1955 and had attended Purdue University, Calumet.  He was a US Army Veteran and a retiree of the Lake County Surveyor’s Office, Crown Point, with over 20 years of service. A devoted husband, dad and grandpa, Larry will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the charity of your choice or do something nice for someone you love in Larry’s memory would be appreciated.
