Irene A. Kusbel (nee Janik) 92 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 10, 2017 at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago. She was the beloved wife of the late Benedict A. Kusbel who passed away April 3, 1983; loving mother of David (Pam) Kusbel of Shepherd, MI, Kenny Kusbel of Whiting and the late George Kusbel; cherished daughter-in-law and caregiver, Donna Kusbel of Whiting; adoring grandmother of Katie Kusbel, Danny (Becky) Kusbel, Juli (Don) Grage and the late Daryl Kusbel; dearest great grandma of Georgia and Brendan; dear caregiver, Sandy Ciesla; proud aunt to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, many cousins. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Michel and Mary Jades and two brothers, George and Andrew Janik.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 9:15am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. Casimir Church, Hammond with the Rev. Eduardo Malagon, officiating; interment, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; visitation at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; parish wake service at the funeral home on Monday at 7:00pm.
Irene Kusbel was born on February 8, 1925 in Whiting, Indiana to Anthony and Johanna (Kitka) Janik and was a lifelong resident. She was a member of St. Casimir Church, Hammond and had been a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Whiting where she had sung with the church choir for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union, BR. 79. Irene was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan, she loved to play cards and crochet and was an excellent cook and baker (especially her nut rolls and homemade noodles). Devoted to her family, Irene will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Whiting Food Pantry or to the Sisters of SS. Cyril and Methodius would be appreciated.
