Dennis R. Weller, 66 of Whiting , retired Whiting Chief of Police, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Community Hospital, Munster, surrounded by his most cherished family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Glenda (nee Westerfield); loving father of James (Tami), LCPD, Aron (Amy), ISP and Bridget (Yanis); proud Papaw of Jett; brother of Darlene (Bill) Fager and Donna (John) McGuire; dear son-in-law of Beverly (late Herschel) Westerfield; fond brother-in-law of Jewell (Ron) Fortener, Butch (Lisa) Westerfield and Anna (Dan) Irvine; dearest nephew of Aunt Susie and Uncle Wayne Russell; many nieces and nephews; adored furry companions, “Cubby” and “Bear”.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 11:00am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting with Pastor Dan Jacobsen, officiating; cremation to follow; visitation at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00pm.
Dennis Weller was born on May 25, 1951 to Don and Wanda (Poznanski) Weller. He was a lifelong resident of Whiting and was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1970. Dennis loved his Lord and Savior, serving as an ordained deacon and an active member of Bethel Church and Ministries, Hobart/Portage. He was a Whiting Police Officer for 29 years retiring as Chief of Police with a service of 16 years under Mayor Robert J. Bercik. He was a member of the Whiting F.O.P. Lodge 68 and the Whiting B.P.O Elks, Lodge 1273 (memorial service, Wednesday at 7:00pm). An avid stamp collector, Dennis was a member of the Calumet Stamp Club. He was a devoted Chicago Bears and Cubs fan and enjoyed trapshooting, hunting, fishing and was an excellent cook. Devoted to his family, Dennis will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Bethel Church and Ministries would be appreciated.
