Cathryn ”Kay” Kometz, (nee Kupcha) 95 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at her residence. She was the beloved wife of the late John Kometz who passed away October 24, 2004; loving mother of J. Donald Kometz of Valparaiso and Michael (Sharon) Kometz of Whiting; cherished grandmother of Robert (Laura) Kometz, Jeanie (Dan) Kristek and Dawn (Patrick) Ramirez; adoring great grandma of Logan, Brittney, Jordan, Rachel, Desi, Valerie, Julie and the late Adam; dear sister-in-law of Dorrie (late Mike) Kometz; proud aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ann Tegosik, Mary “Fannie” Bacon, Ann Velesko, Mary Clingerman and Helen Dybel and her brothers, Joseph Kupcha, John Kupcha, Steve Bondra and Michael “Spider” Bondra.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017, 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting;10:00am Liturgy at St. Mary’s Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. Stephen Muth, officiating; interment, St. Mary Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00pm.. Parastas Service at the funeral home on Sunday at 5:00pm.

Kay Kometz was born on October 23, 1921 in Whiting, Indiana to Damjan and Mary (Pramuk) Kupcha-Bondra and was raised by her mother and step-father, Michael Bondra, Sr.. She was a lifelong resident and a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1939. Kay was a member of St. Mary’s Assumption Byzantine Catholic Church, Whiting, the St. Mary Altar, Rosary and Sacred Heart Societies and the Slovak Catholic Sokol, Wreath 81. A licensed beautician in the State of Indiana, Kay formerly work for Flowers Beauty Shop in East Chicago and was a retiree of Continental Bank (Bank of America) with a service of 20 years. She loved tending to her garden and was an expert seamstress. Devoted to her family, Kay will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to thank all who were involved in caring for Kay these last few months, especially Sophia.
