You were there for my birth I was there for your death
I remember Floating about within you listening to the world When for the first time I heard you talking and singing Such a soft, loving and reassuring voice I remember Teaching me the golden rule, to be open minded and to watch over my younger siblings Having patience and allowing me to help with chores as I washed dad’s socks in the toilet I remember Ensuring me through our mutual tears that everything would be alright on my first day of school Tolerating and even encouraging my incessant asking of “Why?” I remember Playing 500 rummy for hours on end Conversing about everything with no subject off limits I remember Allowing me to cut the apron strings and become independent While knowing and allowing me to realize that a son can never truly cut all the apron strings I remember Accepting my decision to share my love and marry the girl of my dreams Being overjoyed when becoming a grandmother I remember Looking down a long road lined with trees with you far off in the distance and us waving at each other Hearing, “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. Love you!” Then being startled and woken up by the moonlight suddenly shining on my face through the window Thinking to myself, “I love you mom!”
