Basil W. "Bill" Hnath

Basil W. “Bill” Hnath, 81 of Whiting, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018 at his residence. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ann Marie (nee Plavec); loving father of  William Hnath, Eileen (Jeff) Riggs and Betty (Walter) Serwacki; cherished grandfather of Amanda and Nicole Riggs, Alexander Serwacki, Heather Serwacki and Megan (John) Jantelezio; adoring great grandpa of Jacob; dearest brother of John (Phyllis) Hnath, Mary (Henry) Croak and the late Ann (late Lee) Carson; dear brother-in-law of Fran (late Tom) Plavec, Ron (late Mary Ann) Carlson and the late Jim Plavec; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, 11:00am at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 118th St. and Atchison Ave., Whiting, with Pastor John C. Henry, officiating; interment to follow at Concordia Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm and at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00am to time of services. Devotional Service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:00pm.

Bill Hnath was born on August 14, 1936 in Chicago (Hegewisch) to John and Ilona Hnath. He was a graduate of the Chicago Vocational High School, Class of 1954 and was a US Army Veteran. He was a very active member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Whiting, where he served as the Sexton for 13 years and had been the Sunday School Superintendent. He was a retiree of the US Steel Co. (South Works) with a service of 30 years and was a former employee of Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. (downtown Chicago store) with a service of nine years. Bill loved to “tinker” around his home and was an all around handy man. Devoted to his family, he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Whiting, would be appreciated
