Elizabeth A. “Betty” Skvarek (nee Cerven) 93 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago. She was the beloved wife of 58 years to the late Joseph J. Skvarek, who passed away August 2, 2008; loving mother of Joann (Allen) Banvich and Joseph G. (Debbie) Skvarek; cherished grandmother of Michael (Madison) Skvarek and Kristina Skvarek; dearest great granddogs, “Cooper”, “Mackey” and “Wally”.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2024 10:00am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30am at St. Adalbert Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Charles W. Niblick, officiating; interment, Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville; visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; members of the parish will offer prayers at the funeral home on Tuesday at 4:00pm. Betty Skvarek was born on June 16, 1930 to Vendo and Theresa (Zajac) Cerven. A lifelong resident of Whiting, she was a graduate of Whiting High School, Class of 1948. She was a devoted member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Whiting, where she was a member of the St. Ann Sodality (past secretary), Rosary Society, sang with the funeral choir, made nut rolls and noodles and was on the Holubky Dinner committee. She is currently a member of St. Adalbert Church, Whiting. Proud of her Slovak heritage, Betty was a very active member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, BR. 452 (auditor) and was the former secretary of the Helen Kocan Okres 6. Betty had served on the annual Lake County Slovak Day Committee for many years. She was also a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol, Wreath 81 and the former Whiting K of C Wives Club and Daughters of Isabella. Civically, she often worked the polls on election days, was a census taker and was a member of the senior group at the Whiting Mascot Hall of Fame. She was a retired supervisor from K Mart with a service of 25 years and was an avid Purdue, Chicago Bulls and Cubs fan. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Betty will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to her caregivers, Anne Marie, Ann and Norma for all the compassion shown to Betty while she was in their care. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Immaculate Conception Grotto Fund, c/o the St. John Rectory, 1849 Lincoln Ave., Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated.
