Charles D. "Chuck" Schmittel

Charles D. “Chuck” Schmittel, Sr., 69 of Whiting, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at his residence. Beloved father of Christy Schmittel, Samantha Doughty, Charles (Tiffany) Schmittel, Jr., Nichole (Mario) Mariani and Steven Schmittel; cherished grandfather of Christopher (Brittany), Danielle (Ulises), Beck, Caydence, Paige, Marie, Alyssa and Harper; adoring great grandpa of Joseph, Samuel and Sophia; dearest brother of Richard (Marge) Schmittel and Deborah (late Mike) Arnold; many special nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Chuck’s Life will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00p.m. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th Street, Whiting. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on-line at www.baranfh.com.

Chuck Schmittel was born on January 18, 1955 to Arnold and Elizabeth “Betty” (Briggs) Schmittel. A lifelong residence of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community, he was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1973. He was a retiree of the LTV Steel Co., East Chicago with a service of 29 years, was a member of the USW, Local 1011 and was currently employed by the Hammond Port Authority. Chuck enjoyed going fishing, collecting baseball cards and comic books and caring for his huge variety of house plants. Devoted to his family and friends, he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
