Shelby Heleen Lofay (nee Weiss) 73 of Whiting, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2018 surrounded by her most cherished family, at her residence. She was the beloved wife of  the late John J. Lofay who passed away on November 9, 2005; loving mother of John (Tiffany) Lofay, II; stepmother of Cynthia (Steve) Rosiek; cherished grandmother of Julian, Jaden, Jordan and Jiana; dear sister-in-law of Beverly Dahlkamp and Olga (Bill) Becich; many nieces and nephews; canine companion, “Mindy”. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Dahlkamp, Richard Weiss and Joseph Rodgers.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018, 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; cremation to follow; visitation at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00pm; parish wake service at the funeral home on Friday at 4:30pm.

Shelby Lofay was born on January 7, 1944 in Hammond, Indiana to the Norbert and Elinor Weiss and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting and the Lake County Homemakers Assoc. She was a retired supervisor for the Illinois Central Railroad. She had attended the College of Advance Traffic for the Railroad, was the Jr. Achievement Advisor for the railroad and was a member of the Railway Businesswomen’s Assoc. She especially enjoyed her “Breakfast Club” friends and swimming at the Hammond Civic Center. Devoted to her family, Shelby will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Hospice of the Calumet Area would be appreciated.
