Rose Matalik Obituary

Rose C. Matalik (nee O’Drobinak) 98 of Hammond, passed away peacefully at her residence on the morning of Monday, March 5, 2018.  She was the beloved wife of the late Emil Haviar and Andrew J. Matalik; loving mother of Cheryl (late Ron) Mikuly and David (Kathleen) Haviar; cherished grandmother of Jason (Griffin) Haviar and Kristin (Edward) Lombardo; adoring great grandma of Oliva and Madelyn Lombardo and Finley and Maxwell Haviar; dear sister-in-law of Sharon O’Drobinak, Florence Pietrzak, Edward (Adeline) Matalik, Betty (late Ervin) Eggebrecht and Mary Ann Miskus; proud aunt to many nieces and nephews and her canine companion, “Mira”. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Justine Mayernik, Sophie Hrapchak, Mary Potasnik, Margaret Falaschetti and Anne Sunny and three brothers, Louis, William and Joseph O’Drobinak.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 10:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; interment, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville; visitation at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 9:00am to time of services.

Rose Matalik was born on September 2, 1919 in Whiting, Indiana to Joseph and Justine (Kovalcik) O’Drobinak and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, the St. John Rosary Society, the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Assoc., BR. 81 and the former K of C Wives Club of the Whiting Knights of Columbus. Rose loved life, She loved to bake, sew, knit, read, travel and dance and to attend theatre and concerts. Rose always put others before herself and was devoted to her family, she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. John School Endowment Fund, the Share Foundation or to Humane Indiana would be appreciated.
