Mary Anne Zack (nee Jurkowski), 91 of Whiting, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at her residence. She is survived by her pride and joy, her beloved twin daughters, Judith Ann Latanation of South Bend,IN and Janice Marie Latanation of Whiting; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Michael Latanation (who died for his country during the Korean Conflict) and Leo G. Zack, Jr.; her parents, Andrew and Marie Jurkowski and two brothers, Robert Jurkowski and Donald Jurkowski.

Private funeral services were held on Saturday, July 1, 2017 with a Mass of Christian Burial being offered at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. Mark R. Peres, C.PP.S., officiating; interment, St. John Cemetery, Hammond. There was no visitation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting.

Mary Anne Zack was born on April 17, 1926 in Whiting, Indiana. She was a lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community and was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1945. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting and the St. John Rosary Society. Known as the “Shoe Lady”, Mary Anne worked in retail in Whiting for R&S Shoes, Whiting Shoes, Powell’s Shoes, the Whiting Store, Gazda’s and Gansinger Jewelers. She enjoyed bowling (Parkview Lanes), shopping and stopping at the Horseshoe Casino. With heartfelt thanks, Judith and Janice wish to acknowledge the staff of St. Catherine Hospital and St. Catherine Home Health Care for the excellent care provided to Mary Anne while she was under their care. Memorials to the St. John School Endowment Fund, would be appreciated.
