Mary D. (Dmitruck) Ihnat

Mary D. Ihnat (nee Dmitruck) 93 of Whiting passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence, Munster. She was the beloved wife of the late John Ihnat and the loving mother of the late Rosemarie Ihnat; dearest sister of Pauline Dmitruck of Whiting and the late Michael Dmitruck; dear sister-in-law of Helen Ihnat and Ann Rose (late Albert) Janik, both of Hammond; cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews with her special caregivers, Carol Vargo, niece and the Phyllis and Frank Ratkay family.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 18, 2013, 9:30am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting; a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting with the Rev. Kevin M. Scalf, C.PP.S., officiating; interment, St. John Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00pm. The St. John Rosary Society, together with members of the parish, will offer prayers at the funeral home on Sunday at 4:00pm.

Mary Ihnat was born on February 19, 1919 in Argo, Illinois to Alexander and Rose Dmitruck and was a longtime resident of the Calumet Region. She was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1937 and was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Wave. Mary grew up in the family business, Dmitruck Tailors and Cleaners in the Robertsdale section of Hammond. She was a talented seamstress learning at her father’s side. In her later years she made costumes for the Marian Theatre Guild and the Lake Central Theatre Group. She also enjoyed making Halloween costumes for generations of children from her Davis Avenue neighborhood. Mary was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting and the St. John Rosary Society. She was a retiree of the Lever Bros. Company, Hammond and was a member of the Lever Bros. 25 Year Club. Devoted to her family, Mary will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Memorials to St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Whiting, would be appreciated.
