Gregory Howard “Greg” Plemons, age 62, of Whiting, IN passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017 with his loving family by his side. Born March 29, 1955, Greg was the son of Howard and the late Emma Plemons. Greg is survived by his children, Gregory J. (Erica) Plemons of Munster, IN, Joshua (Jennifer) Plemons of Griffith, IN, and Olivia Plemons of Whiting, IN; grandchildren: Brianna, Christian, Adelyn, Kyle, Cody, and Emma; sister: Theresa (Thomas) Bubacz of Middlebury, IN and his niece, Christin, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. 

Greg was a lifetime resident of Whiting and a 1973 graduate of Whiting High School. He had served as a Firefighter for the City of Whiting. In 1986, Mayor Joseph Grenchik awarded Greg a citation for bravery for having taken great personal risk & peril of his own life. He heroically helped evacuate and revive a citizen overcome by smoke & exhaustion from a fire. The citation stated that he reflected only the highest traditions of the fire service and the profession he represented. Greg had also worked at Oak Ridge Prairie for the Lake County Parks in Indiana, and was currently a dispatcher for Herrera's Towing in Whiting. For many years, Greg was a member of a billiard league and served as president of the league. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Greg was a loving son, brother, dad, and “papaw”. He will be missed for his sense of humor, his down-to-earth personality and being a friend to all. Greg will be forever loved and greatly missed. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation for all the thoughts, prayers, and support from family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 10:00am at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting with the Rev. William Hall of the Whiting Baptist Church, officiating; interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, IN; visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, from 3:00pm to 8:00pm.
