Elaine (Sobeck) Janik, 89 of Merrillville, formerly of Whiting, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Christ Hospital, Oak Lawn, IL. She was the beloved wife of the late John “Rocky” Janik who passed away in 1988; loving mother of Bernadette (Edward) Pratl, Joan Marie (Don) Brenner and the late John Janik, II; cherished grandmother of Marytherese, Nicole, John, Ted and Christopher; great grandmother of eleven; dear sister of Dolores Danish; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00am at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Dr., Dyer, entombment to follow at St. John Cemetery, Hammond; visitation at the church on Thursday morning from 9:00am to time of services.

Elaine Janik was born on May 4, 1927 and was a longtime resident of the Calumet Region. She was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church, Whiting and  St. Maria Goretti Church, Dyer. She was a member of the American Legion Allied Post 369 Women’s Auxilliary (past president) and a charter member of the St. Catherine Hospital Pink Ladies. Elaine was a very  talented artist and oil painter and was a charter member of the 119th Street Artists, Whiting. Devoted to her family, she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to “Honor Flights” for Veterans, would be appreciated.
