Donnie Sabol was born on March 24, 1926 in Superior, Wisconsin to John and Rose (Spavor) Furiak. She was a lifelong resident of the Whiting-Robertsdale Community and was a graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1943. She was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Assoc., BR. 81 (past secretary), the Women’s Guild of the Calumet College of St. Joseph and the Marian Theatre Guild (St. John Drama Club). She had participated in many productions through the years and was even working the box office up to a couple of years ago. It was during her time at the Drama Club that Donnie co-wrote an original play with the late Mildred Kurella Buksar called “Song of the Immagrant”. It was about a family from Slovakia coming to Whiting to look for work. Donnie had the part of one of the daughters. It was during this production she met Raymond Sabol, a young man who had just come home from the Army. Ray and Donnie became part of the “Marrying Theatre Guild” on April 30, 1949. Donnie was a charter member of the Pink Ladies of St. Catherine Hospital. She volunteered at the Gift Shop, where she opened the door at 7:30am every Thursday, for 14 years after she had closed her greeting card store in Robertsdale, ‘Yards of Cards”. Donnie was also a volunteer at the Whiting Food Pantry well into her ‘80s. Donnie had seven children (including a set of twins), twelve grandchilden and six great grandchildren. Her happiest times were the holidays with her family gathering at her home for home cooking and dozens of cookies she and her daughters would make. Devoted to her family, Donnie will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Marian Theatre Guild, 1849 Lincoln Ave., Whiting, IN 46394, would be appreciated.
